January 2012
Hello Quilters!
Happy New Year from Rita, Mary, Sue Doyle and me!
Another year has zoomed by and now we are looking forward to all
that 2012 will bring! At Pine Grove, that usually means fabric, books,
patterns and notions, just ask Randy (UPS) and John (FedEX). We have
new fabric lines on order all the time and loads of new blenders are arriving, along with collections from Moda, P & B, Timeless Treasures, Marcus,
Andover and more. We have two new lines due in February from a brand
new division of Timeless Treasures called Dear Stella and we've already
seen (and ordered) some Holiday fabric for this year. If you receive our newsletters online, Mrs. Doyle will keep you informed on the new fabrics
and monthly sales through her monthly email updates and reminders.
We will have two new Blocks of the Month beginning in March and
April. A new Jo's Club will begin soon and the Fourth Annual Pine Grove
Spring Seminar is right around the corner!! The dates for the seminar are April 12, 13 and 14, 2012. The class listings and brief descriptions are
included in this newsletter. If you receive this newsletter via e-mail,
sample pictures of the projects are included. If you are reading a snail mail version, there are no pictures, but you can go to our web site, www.pinegrovequiltshop.net, to view them or visit the shop. The
samples will all be on display in the shop by Tuesday, January 3th, our first
day open after the New Year. This is the first day for SEMINAR REGISTRATION. You can visit us at the shop or call us to reserve your
spot in the class(es) of your choice. Payment is required at the time of registration.
March 20, 2007, we opened our doors for the first day of business
and this year we will celebrate our fifth anniversary with a sale beginning appropriately on March 20th and running through Saturday, March 24th.
On that very first day in 2007, we were so excited and extremely nervous. Judy and Bonnie and Rita from the original Pine Grove Shop came to visit
and give us moral support, which was much appreciated. But, the funniest
thing was that both of our mothers came for the opening, mine from Olean
and Mrs. Doyle's from Lewiston. Neither of us knew they were going to
come, and neither of the mothers knew the other was coming. They were
both worried that their girls would open this shop and nobody would come
and so we would really need our moms to be here. As it turned out, the
shop was crazy busy all day long-Judy, Bonnie and Rita pitched in to help us
for awhile. Our Moms sat at a table in the middle of the store with smiles from ear to ear telling everyone who would listen that we were their daughters and how happy they were for us.
This has been a very educational, interesting, challenging, delightful, time-consuming, life-altering and wonderful 5 years. Thanks to all our customers for showing up on that first day and on so many days since then.
Hope to see you soon!
Sue Dray

There are two new Block of the Month Programs beginning in the New Year:
Amish With a Twist
Designed by Nancy Rink, and using traditional, solid fabrics with a black background this is a beautiful Amish sampler quilt. There will be bonus patterns each month. The fabrics may be just a smidge brighter than a typical Amish quilt, and there is a small amount of appliqué which livens up the border. The fabric is from Marcus Brothers Centennial Solid Fabrics; the finished size is 88" X 105" and the program begins in March and runs through July 2012. There is a $15.00 non-refundable Registration Fee and the cost of the program is $35.00 per month for 5 month program.
Northern Stars
This block of the month was designed by
Wing and a Prayer. This is the latest Timeless Treasures Tonga batik BOM. There
is an array of stars on a light background
with a lovely sashing and border design configuration. The finished size is 96" X 108" and it will begin in April 2012 and run for 13 months. There is a $15.00 non-refundable Registration Fee and the cost of the
program is $27.00 per month for 13 month program.
"Cotton Club" Block of the Month
This striking Civil War Reproduction Block of the Month Program is already in progress. There are a few more spots available for anyone who is interested. The pattern is from Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen Robison of Bonnie Blue Quilts. It is a pieced quilt, finishing at 78" X 85", using fabric from the Marcus Brothers collection designed by Paula Barnes. The colors are madder and turkey reds, browns and absolutely wonderful shirtings. This is a 12 month program. The cost of the program is $24.00 per month.
Jo Morton's Little Women Club 11:
Jo Morton is one of our favorite designers of fabric and patterns.
As a matter of fact, our Andover fabric rep said we have more Jo Morton fabric than any other shop in NY state.
Jo's fabric designs are 19th century reproduction pieces and her pattern
designs are most often small pieced quilts
and wall hangings, with occasional larger quilts and appliqué. She usually has a new book out every year, but she also designs a group of small quilt projects that are available exclusively through quilt shops offering
them as a "Jo's Little Women Club." We will begin Club 11 in January 2012 and there will be eight sessions (Jan/Feb/Mar/May/June/Oct/Nov/Dec). There are nine new patterns in this club program. With Jo's Club 11 membership you attend one of the demos each month, receive a copy of
each of the patterns, and have a fun time sharing ideas and show and tell
with other Jo Morton enthusiasts. If you are registered for this club, you
will receive all your patterns whether or not you are able to attend the meetings. The cost of this club is $52.00 for the year.
We have scheduled two club meeting dates per month for club 11
(see below). When you register for the club, you will sign up for the
meeting day that is better for you. At those meetings, we will review the pattern steps, demo sewing techniques, see samples, show and share your
Jo projects, and have snacks. Many of you are already committed Jo fabric collectors, so you probably have a nice stash of Jo fabrics. All of the club quilts are smallish, so fat quarters will be perfect for piecing, along with yardage for borders. We order almost every Jo bolt that comes along, and
we will always have lots of Jo fat quarters and yardage available in the shop.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you want to join Jo's Club 11
so we order enough pattern sets.
The Jo's Club 11 meeting times will be: (fall dates to be determined)

Location: Amherst Museum
3755 Tonawanda Creek Road
Amherst, NY 14228
The Fourth Annual Pine Grove Spring Seminar is set to go! We loved attending the seminars at the original Pine Grove and we have had a
fabulous time the past three Aprils hosting our own Pine Grove Spring Seminars at the Amherst Museum location. Once again this year, we will
have twelve excellent classes, delicious catered lunches (Donna Eick will be catering-always yummy), show & tell, door prizes and lots of fat quarter shopping.
There will be four classes on each of the three days. We have a
group of exceptional women teaching the classes. These ladies are all
creative, talented, expert quilters with lots of helpful hints and sewing
tips they will be sharing with you.
Classes will run from 9:30am 'til 4:00pm. We will open the doors at about 9:10am so you will have time to set up your supplies and get a cup of coffee before announcements are made and instruction begins.
Seminar classes will cost $56.00 each, which includes lunch.
We will be putting together a limited number of kits for most of the class offerings. If you are interested in a kit for a particular class, let us know as soon as possible. Kits are only available for seminar registrants.
Any left after the seminar will be for sale in the shop.

Seminar Classes on Thursday, 4/12/2012
A. Heritage
Teacher-Judy Farnham
This is a stunning quilt designed by our own Nancy Lee (Davis) Murty.
It is the cover quilt on Nancy's newest book "Sisterhood, A Quilting Tradition." Nancy used a light background which gives the patchwork blocks a floating appearance and is very nice. Judy is always looking for "that old look" and used a darker, blending fabric, which gives the quilt a very different look. As always, do your own thing and have fun with it. Nancy lists the skill level as experienced beginner.
B. Spades
Teacher-Judy Schryver

If you love half-square triangle, this is
the quilt for you. Gather your fat quarters
in pairs (lights and darks) and make them
dance around your quilt. Requires careful
one quarter inch seams. This quilt is from
the book "Fat Quarter Winners" by
Monique Dillard.
C. Strip Around the Block
Teacher-Gretchen Lang
Once again, Gretchen is teaching a class that uses those popular 2½" x WOF strips, either from a Moda jelly roll, a Hoffman bali pop, a Tonga Treat or just cut from a width of fabric. The strips really make a project move quickly. You will have lots of squares done by the end of the day. The quilt finishes at 84" X 100," but the pattern also has a smaller size option.
D. Two Fabric Appliqué Quilts
Teacher-Carole Anderson
Carole has made several samples of these two-fabric quilts. She
has made samples using the template size from the pattern and she has
done others with reduced sizes. You will have four different patterns to choose from to try this technique. The hardest part will be picking only
one!

Seminar Classes on Friday, 4/13/2012
E. The Long Road Home
Teacher-Judy Farnham
This quilt design is from a Paula Barnes Bonnie Blue pattern. It is a Civil War
inspired quilt that finishes at 70" X 77."
Judy loves this quilt and said it was a joy to make. It's easy to piece even though it has
one inch squares in the pieced blocks. It is joined together by larger plain blocks. The blocks are set on the diagonal with a set-in triangle border, which puts this quilt in the experienced beginner category. This
doesn't need to be done in Civil War fabrics. You could use any group of scrap fabrics
and coordinate with background and border
fabrics.
F. Row Sampler
Teacher-Linda Davis
Linda says, "Don't skip this quilt because of the size." In this class
you will learn how to work with "normal" size pieces that easily become just the right size for a miniature quilt. You will make flying geese, bias squares and four patches that are an easy size to work with and when finished, the project will wow all of your friends. Linda will be teaching from one of the Fat Quarter Quilting patterns by Lori Smith. The patterns in this series feature several16" X 20" projects, so there are 8 more small quilt patterns included. By the end of the day your quilt top will be done-or almost done!
G. Jo's Whig Rose
Teacher-Jean Butzer
Class participants may make the 4-block Jo Morton design into the original 60 inch quilt or elect to make a less time consuming one block wall hanging. The project combines piecing and appliqué and is suitable for those with some quilting experience (intermediate). Techniques for both needle-turn hand appliqué and
hand-look machine appliqué will be covered.
The class will be filled with quilting tips
that may be applied to future quilting
projects.
H. Road to the Mountain
Teacher-Ann Shaw
This quilt is made with Jacob's ladder blocks set in a positive/negative color setting. A great pieced border frames the blocks and adds to the overall impression. This quilt is much easier to construct than it would seem to be at first glance.
Seminar Classes on Saturday, 4/14/2012
I. The Long Road Home (same class as E, just taught on a different day)
Teacher-Judy Farnham
This quilt design is from a Paula Barnes Bonnie Blue pattern. It is a
Civil War inspired quilt that finishes at 70" X 77." Judy loves this quilt and
said it was a "joy" to make. It's easy
to piece even though it has one inch squares in the pieced blocks. It is
joined together by larger plain blocks. The blocks are set on the diagonal with a set-in triangle border, which puts this quilt in the experienced beginner category. This doesn't need to be done in Civil War fabrics. You could use
any group of scrap fabrics and coordinate with background and border
fabrics.
J. Chains of Friendship
Teacher-Linda Davis
This quilt is a stash buster and easy besides! Use all scraps, concentrate on color values, or stay within your favorite color families to make your own special quilt. In the book, "Sisterhood a Quilting Tradition" (on pages 48 and 49) check out the 5 different color schemes used, perhaps one of them will spark your creative side. Only squares and rectangles of different sizes are used throughout the quilt to create Chains of Friendship. In class there will be suggestions of time saving techniques that may be used while creating your special quilt.
K. Bali Sea Star
Teacher-Janet Klapper
This is a great project to use your
batik scraps to make a two-toned star with
a neutral background. Bali Sea Star is made with 2 ½ inch strips or a jelly roll and does
not involve intricut cuts to make the stunning stars. The border is made by using the remaining 2 ½ inch strips. This quilt is for
an experienced beginner.
L. Framed Rectangles
Teacher-Jeanette Kuck
This quilt is made up of rectangles that will be boxed in by another fabric and assembled. Jeanette has made two samples using this quilt design. One is a lap size using Christmas fabrics and the other is a batik bed runner. This pattern is very adaptable to different sized projects and Jeanette will be sharing the how-to's for place mats and table runners as well as for larger quilts. It is not difficult, but cutting and constructing the smaller squares requires concentration.

Donate For Life Quilts:
Mrs. Doyle has a friend, Michelle, who is one of two Family Support
Counselors for Upstate New York Transplant Services (UNYTS).
The counselors support donor families during their time of grief due to the sudden tragedy of a family member passing. One way they can do this is to offer the families a comfort quilt. These are small quilts about
24" X 48-60" which will be draped across the bed of the family's loved one by one of the counselors. When their loved one has passed, the family will be
able to take the quilt home to keep. We can all help by donating small quilts of this size so they may be distributed to local families in the hope of bringing a little bit of comfort during a very sad time. Any quilts that you make for
this program can be dropped off at the shop and we will make sure they
get to the counselors at UNYTS. Thank you.
The Amherst Museum Quilt Guild Show:
This quilt show will be held April 27th, 28th, and 29th, 2012 at the
